Kenai Alternative High School
Kenai Alternative High School identified increases in the graduation rate and increases in attendance rates as the gains tied to its involvement in the Alternative Schools initiative. Kenai reported administering a seven-week class on nutrition, conducting a “Quit Tobacco” cessation program, and implementing a PE program it credits as a major contributor to graduating the most students ever in its 20-year history. Furthermore, Kenai provided two Healthy Choices/Changes classes covering essential health topics ranging from STD/HIV prevention to healthy cooking/eating. In the 2011-2012 school year, Kenai Alternative constructed a large community coalition and dedicated considerable effort to addressing student substance use and abuse. Accomplishments included partnering with Nakenu Family Center to conduct presentations to students on alcohol, drugs, and anger management, establishing a student mentorship program with Kenai Peninsula College, collaborating with the Kenai Police Department to both teach students about the dangers of designer drugs and to work toward removing them in the Kenai community, and consulting with the Kenai mayor on the local challenges of designer drug use. These joint efforts culminated in the closure of a local business that was selling bath salts (designer drug similar to amphetamines). Additionally, Kenai reported 39 graduates for the 2011-2011 school year.
In the 2012-2013 school year, Kenai reported all staff completed suicide awareness and prevention training, which was incorporated into the Healthy Relationship class for students. Furthermore, Kenai provided two Healthy Choices/Changes classes covering essential health topics ranging from STD/HIV prevention to healthy cooking/eating. Finally, Kenai Alternative students gave back to the community by sponsoring a Thanksgiving Community Celebration.
