Alaska Transition to Teaching (AKT2)
All AKT2 candidates must be able to meet State of Alaska Department of Education & Early Development criteria for obtaining an Initial Teacher Certificate, as well as additional requirements of the AKT2 program. Therefore, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in an endorsable area and have a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Pass the PRAXIS I tests of basic skills (reading, writing, and math)
- Pass a background check
- Have not held a teaching certificate currently or previously
Proof that the candidate meets all eligibility requirements will be required during the Phase II Application process, but is not necessary to complete the initial online AKT2 Pre-application.
Applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree awarded by an institution of higher education that has been evaluated by a recognized regional accrediting association. The degree must be equivalent to four or more years of successful undergraduate study. The bachelor’s degree must be in an endorsable area and must be conferred before becoming an AKT2 candidate. An official transcript will be requested during the Phase II Application.
In past years there has been a lower need for teachers outside the core content areas of English, mathematics, and science. In order to make themselves more marketable to AKT2's partner districts, individuals wishing to teach in areas like social studies, history, business, art, and music are encouraged to pass Praxis II assessments in areas of higher need before the March hiring season begins.
Applicants must pass the PRAXIS I tests of basic reading, writing, and math skills.
The Praxis I tests measure basic academic skills, such as reading, writing, and mathematics. You must have passing scores on all sections of the Praxis I tests. Test scores must be sent to the teacher certification office directly from Education Testing Services (ETS) using code 7027. Passing scores for Praxis I tests must on file with the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development Teacher Certification prior to being accepted as an AKT2 candidate.
IMPORTANT: Please review the testing dates and locations offered by ETS to prepare for taking the Praxis I and II tests.
For further information regarding the Praxis I, please contact Education Testing Service (ETS) online or at 609-771-7395.
Applicants must pass a background check.
AKT2 seeks applicants who are concerned with developing each student’s potential, and as such, act as role models for students. It is essential that candidates sustain the highest degree of ethical conduct. Please review the Code of Ethics and Teaching Standards in reference to professional conduct.
As part of the Phase II Application process, applicants will submit one completed fingerprint card as well as other personal information that will be used by the FBI to run a background check.
Applicants must have not held a teaching certificate currently or previously.
AKT2 is specifically designed to assist individuals who do not have a teaching certificate and have never had a teaching certificate from Alaska or any other state. We encourage those who have held teacher certification who would like to teach in Alaska to visit the Alaska Teacher Certification website which will explain their options for obtaining certification in Alaska.
