  • Through a series of regional and statewide meetings associate with the Alaska Rural Systemic Initiative, the following Alaska cultural standards have been developed for educators teaching in Alaska. Standards have been drawn up in five areas: students, educators, curriculum, schools, and communities. The cultural standards included here serve as a complement to the content standards. The content standards stipulate what students should know and be able to do; the cultural standards provide guidance on how to engage students in learning through the local culture. It is intended that all forms of knowledge, ways of knowing and world views be recognized as equally valid, adaptable and complementary to one another in mutually beneficial ways. The cultural standards are not intended to be inclusive, exclusive or conclusive, and thus should be reviewed and adapted to fit local needs. They are available to schools as a tool to use when building up the rich and varied cultural traditions practiced throughout Alaska.

Alaska Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools

  • Alaska did not adopt the English Language Arts Common Core State Standards. However, Alaskan stakeholders found our previous standards to be lower in rigor than other states’ standards and to lack clarity in terms of what students should know and be able to do. We wanted to increase our standards’ rigor so that Alaska’s high school graduates are better prepared for college education, technical training, and careers after high school. In 2012, the State Board of Education & Early Development adopted new academic standards for English Language Arts.
